9 August - Torroella de Montgri-Begur

We could have walked along the coast from L'Estartit to Begur, but there was a very sketchy-looking river crossing. It looked like a better idea to start from Torroella de Montgri, so we took a taxi there. This would be a very different walk, as we would not see the Mediterranean, and we would end the day at a much higher elevation in Begur. Here's the route and the elevation profile.

We started out walking along nice rural paths and through small villages.

We climbed a small hill ...

... then continued walking along farmland roads.

At lunchtime, we found an interesting town square next to the Castell de Pals at the top of a hill.

The last section of our walk was difficult. It wasn't so much that we had to walk uphill. The problem was that the hill was a huge sand dune. The footing was very soft, and we had several km of slow going at the end of our walk.

It felt very good to arrive in Begur.

Hotel Galena Mas Comangau was great, and they had our favorite refreshments waiting for us.

We found our way to the town center for a great dinner ...

... and desert!
